'The Working Side' was painted at Crane Creek Ranch as part of 2023 Umpqua Plein Air in Douglas County, Oregon. Crane Creek Ranch is located outside Roseburg and a gorgeous location that overlooks the North Umpqua River. Me? I hiked down to the ranch's outbuildings and begged the ranch hands to let me paint on the working side. It was late August and we were seeing smoke from wildfires. The smoke changes the quality of light (obviously) and that's what caught my attention. The smoke gave the sky an almost tactile quality, and softened the look of the dry grass hills.
'The Working Side' was awarded 3rd place at 2023 Umpqua Plein Air; Juror, Erik Sandgren
